Relocating is stressful under the best circumstances, but we have a couple of tips to ensure that your move will be less stressful

For starters, the importance of thorough preparation, when faced with a move, can not be overstated. Pen and paper, a tablet or an Excel spreadsheet, is the key to keeping control of a situation that can otherwise spiral out of control and leave the entire family strung out. Make notes of what needs to be done and include timelines to ensure that you are on track.

Declutter

It sounds obvious but it needs to be said: it is pointless to move stuff that you no longer need or use. Declutter, throw away, donate, sell, or gift items that you know are no longer useful. Take one room at a time, work through it, and move on to the next one as it is less overwhelming and more satisfying.

Pack for at least an hour a day

An hour a day of packing can accomplish a lot more than panic packing the day before you move. Set a timer and force yourself to stick to it. Before you know it, you will have packed boxes full of stuff.

Cut down on shopping

Moving the contents of a fridge and pantry is hard work, and throwing away food is unpleasant. Cut down on shopping and consider the creative ways to use up the food in the house. Search for recipes when you run out of ideas. If you still haven't made a dent in your supplies by the time you move, consider donating food to a local charity.

Pack like a pro

  • Leave your clothes on the hangers. This will save you from having to unhang and rehang them at a later stage. It's much easier to wrap items in black bags.
  • Find good uses for towels, linen or even socks by wrapping glasses, plates, mugs, and bottles or other breakables for protection. This will also save on bubble wrap and expensive packing materials.
  • Put suitcase with wheels to good use by loading them with heavy items including books, dishes, pots and pans
  • Colour code boxes to make sure that you know where everything goes before you start unpacking. There is nothing more frustrating than lugging a box that belongs in the kitchen to the bedroom only to open it and discover it's not what you were looking for.
  • Do not let technology get the better of you. Take pictures of the back of your television, sound system, and computer system and ensure that plugging things in once you are in your new home is a breeze.
  • Take pictures of the contents of boxes before you close them up to give you an idea of what is where.

Moving day

  • Make sure everything is packed and ready before moving day as last-minute-anything usually results in flaring tempers and frayed nerves.
  • Pack a cooler box with water and snacks since food is usually the last thing on anyone's mind during a move.
  • Pack an overnight bag with essentials to get through the first night. This will take the pressure off having to unpack in a rush.

Enjoy your move; a new home is exciting. Always remember that proper planning goes a long way toward a successful transition.
